Sir Elton John has opened up about the 2017 health scare that left him “close to death” while he was on tour.
The music legend was rushed to hospital last year and spent several days in intensive care after contracting a rare bacterial infection.
Yesterday (January 24), he announced that he was retiring from touring in order to spend more time with his family.
In the wake of that news, he was interviewed earlier today on Lorraine and was pressed on how the health scare factored into his decision to call it a day.
“Got home on Tuesday night, I was in intensive care from Thursday, stayed there for two days. I was very, very close to death – I didn’t know that. I was very fortunate I had a great team of doctors, and it took me seven weeks to get back to normal.
“This is just someone telling me it is about time. But then I recovered, I did the summer dates, winter dates, back to Vegas. I did 96 shows last year, even though I was sick for seven weeks.”
He added: “You think about your mortality, and you think, ‘I want to spend more time with the boys’. It just reaffirms what I’ve been thinking.
you hink you’re completely and utterly solid, and nothing’s going to stop me. Things happen for a reason, and we made this decision a couple of years ago to come off the road, and this has reinforced it.”
In the interview, he also opened up about the death of his once-estranged mother, with whom he reconciled shortly before she passed away last year.
“We reconciled in 2016, and it was a nice reconciliation,” Elton continued. “I saw her a week before she died and I thought, ‘She’s pretty feisty, she’s going to last for a few months’. And a week later she was dead. It really shook me actually.
